World Red Cross Day is also known as Red Crescent Day and is celebrated on May 8 every year. It is observed on this day as Henry Dunant, the founder of ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross) was born. He was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. There are five founding members- Britain, France, Italy, Japan, and the United States. The Red Cross is headquartered in Washington DC in the United States.
It aims to alleviate human suffering, protect life and health, and uphold human dignity, especially during armed conflicts and emergencies. It works for the welfare of people. It is present in every country and supported by millions of volunteers.
The theme for Red Cross Day 2021 is “TOGETHER WE ARE UNSTOPPABLE“. Due to the pandemic, there are no campaigns and drives held this year.
